Mark your calendar for Preparatory Dance auditions

The University of North Carolina School of the Arts Preparatory Dance Program holds auditions in May and August each year, and those accepted are placed into one of four classes based on age and ability. Students in the third and fourth grades do not need to have any previous dance experience, while the older students will need to exhibit an understanding of the basics of dance.

Audition dates for the 2016-17 program are:

Saturday, May 7
Saturday, August 6

Both auditions will be held in the Lindgren/Tyven Studio (formerly Studio A) of Gray Building on the UNCSA campus. Registration begins at 9 a.m. Auditions for rising third through sixth grade will be from 10–11 a.m. and are free. Auditions for rising seventh through ninth grade, with ballet experience, will be from 11 a.m.–noon and costs $15 for the audition/master class.

UNCSA’s Preparatory Dance Program is a unique opportunity for aspiring dancers to explore the world of dance and hone their budding talents. This after-school, pre-professional training program, which has received national recognition for its excellence, is open to third through ninth graders.

No matter what skill level, students will be trained to develop their versatility in dance. Exceptional faculty teach courses in ballet technique, pointe and pre pointe, men’s technique, contemporary dance, jazz technique, character, creative movement, music appreciation, acting, clowning and dance history.
