UNCSA 2009-2011 Strategic Plan
In the spring of 2008 after a period of lively discussion among our campus leadership about the future of the UNCSA, the UNCSA Board of Trustees directed me to update the campus strategic plan. The charge from the Board of Trustees included the review and updating of the UNCSA vision statement, mission statement and core values, and the development of major goals with action plans to move the campus toward the vision, covering a five-year period from 2009 to 2014. In order to ensure the effort reflects a wide spectrum of voices from across campus with an emphasis on arts and academics, the reason we are all here, we began by asking each of our five arts schools, undergraduate academics, and our high school academic program to develop strategic plans to accelerate their development toward excellence as measured against their peers. We also convened a strategic planning committee with representation from our schools, departments, institutes, the Board of Trustees, my staff and me to guide the process and assist with bringing the various school plans into one cohesive, concise UNCSA strategic plan.
Due to the dramatic downturn in the world economy over the past year I endorsed the decision to break our plan into two phases. The first phase is a two-year, short-term plan that focuses on things we must do, if at all possible, given the limited resources that will be available over the next biennium. It is an impressive list of objectives. Successfully achieving these objectives will transform our school providing a solid foundation upon which we can build our dreams. The second phase will be an aspirational plan which will allow us to move beyond what we must do, to things we want to do to improve our great school. (Work on Phase II will begin in January 2010.)
I am extremely pleased and enthusiastic about the results of Phase I. Thank you to the many faculty, staff and students who were involved in various aspects of the effort. If we can achieve our goals in this strategic plan and become the institution described in our vision, we will necessarily act and feel differently, the campus will look different, and the way we are perceived by the external community will change all for the better, propelling us into a greater leadership position in the arts and in our community.
Our revised vision, mission and core values speak to our dedication to developing our students to be artist citizens (the whole artist) prepared to make a meaningful, positive contribution to the arts and society. The vision strives for excellence in everything we do, supported by a diverse faculty, staff and student body immersed in a culture of creativity, optimism, integrity, collaboration and accountability. Together we will work to achieve the goals and objectives of our strategic plan to: improve student success, maximize the potential of each faculty and staff member through continuous learning and professional development, continue to enhance our campus and our operations with new facilities and new sustainable practices, and increase our capacity for interdisciplinary research, engaged scholarship, and creative partnerships to better serve our community, the state of North Carolina, the United States and the world.
Embedded in the strategic plan are actions to increase the resources available to support our progress. As a team, we will work tirelessly to attract the required financial support from public and private sources and be artful stewards of the resources we receive to maximize the return on investment to all our stakeholders.
We stand together, poised to begin our next great journey – a journey toward the ideals we hold in common as artists and art lovers. Bonded by these common ideals there will be no obstacle too big to overcome.
I am honored to be your chancellor and look forward to working alongside you to achieve our vision.
Sincerely,
Chancellor John Mauceri
