High School Program: grades 8-12 for ballet and grades 11-12 for contemporary dance.
- 10th grade students interested in contemporary dance will be given special consideration at the time of audition.
- On-campus housing is available for students in grades 9-12.
- 8th grade applicants must live at home and within commuting distance of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.
College applicants may pursue either a Bachelor of Fine Arts or a Undergraduate Artist Certification in ballet or contemporary dance.
High School and Undergraduate Applicants:
- The application for admission must be completed in full.
- Applicant signature is required along with the parent signature if the applicant is under the age of 18 at the time of application.
- Mail the application to the Office of Admissions along with the nonrefundable application fee ($60 for U.S. Citizens/Permanent U.S. Resident/$110 for international applicants).
- Applications received without the application fee or all questions not answered will be returned to applicant.
- Applicants are encouraged to submit their application by the application deadline to secure the audition date they desire and to allow time for travel arrangements.
- All required documentation must be on file in order for the applicant to find out if they have been accepted by the Admissions Review Committee into the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.
Application Information in Admissions
Scheduling an Audition
- Applicants must write the date and city in which they desire to audition on the application. If sending a DVD please state on the application.
- Written confirmation of the audition date, time and location will be mailed to the applicant from the Office of Admissions after the application has been processed.
- Please allow ten working days for processing.
- Auditions will not be scheduled by phone.
- Applicants are encouraged to submit their application by the deadline to secure the desired audition date and allow time for travel arrangements.
- The University of North Carolina School of the Arts reserves the right to cancel and reschedule auditions, or make other arrangements with the applicant. If weather prohibits an audition from being held the cancellation notice will be placed on www.uncsa.edu.
Audition Requirements (High School and Undergraduate Programs)
- Auditions in both ballet and contemporary dance begin with a short class. A dance faculty member demonstrates all of the dance combinations to be executed.
- Applicants for ballet or contemporary dance must wear practice clothes; no particular leotard color is required for the audition.
- Applicants are to wear no jewelry.
Ballet Applicants
- In addition to the above requirements, female ballet applicants may be asked to do pointe work.
Contemporary Applicants
- In addition to the above requirements, contemporary dance applicants must also present a self-choreographed solo, two to three minutes in length, danced to classical music.
- Examples of classical music composers are Bach, Vivaldi, Beethoven, Mozart, or Copland. Music that is not classical is unacceptable. The classical music you choose for the audition solo must be on audiocassette or compact disc and cued appropriately.
Videotaped Audition Requirements (High School and Undergraduate Programs)
- All DVDs must be received no later than Friday, April 1, 2011 by the Office of Admissions.
- DVDs must be compatible with United States equipment.
- Applicants must wear practice clothes.
Ballet applicants must include the following steps on their videotape:
- At the barre – plié, port de bras, tendu, tendu jeté, rond de jambe par terre, frappé, fondu, rond de jambe en l’air de coté, développé, and grand battement.
- In the center – battement tendu with épaulement, pirouette, petite allegro, and grand allegro.
- A solo of classical variation. Women must present their solo on pointe. Ballet solos should be one to two minutes in length.
Contemporary applicants must include a short technical demonstration at the barre or center and include the following steps:
- Plié, tendu/dégagé (straight and with plié from fifth), rond de jambe, passé développé (front, side, and back), grand battement, and a balance on one leg. Movements should be short, but should demonstrate clarity of form and should not exceed five minutes.
- In addition, a two- to three-minute self-choreographed solo must be performed to classical music. Examples of classical music are Bach, Vivaldi, Beethoven, Mozart and Copland.
The following is a complete on-campus listing of the School of Dance auditions for the Summer Session 2011 and academic year 2011-12. If you wish to be considered for admission, you must audition either in person on one of the following dates, or submit a DVD audition, to be considered for the academic year and the Summer Session. The University of North Carolina School of the Arts reserves the right to cancel and reschedule auditions, or make other arrangements with the applicant.

Regional Auditions -- Each year, the School of Dance conducts numerous auditions throughout the country during the month of January. The off-campus locations are listed below.

In addition to the required documentation listed for the undergraduate or high school programs, international applicants must provide the following information:
APPLICATION

- Checks or money orders should be made payable to UNCSA.

TRANSCRIPTS
- Course work completed at institutions outside U.S. must be submitted with a notarized or certified English translation. An accredited foreign educational credential evaluation service may also be used.
- Submit an official translation in English of courses in which the applicant is enrolled at the time of application.
TEST SCORES
Undergraduate Program
- An official TOEFL score is required of all international applicants to the undergraduate program for whom English is not the first language.
- The minimum acceptable TOEFL score is 550 (paper-based) and 213 (computer-based). The internet based test is evaluated on an individual basis.
High School Program
- An official SLEP score is required of all international applicants to the High School program for whom English is not the first language.
- The required minimum SLEP is 55.

RESUME
- Each applicant provides a resume detailing artistic experience and educational objectives In addition to the above, School of Dance applicants must include on their resume the name of dance instructors, dates of study and number of hours per week of study.
OTHER DOCUMENTS
- If you are a Permanent Resident a copy of both sides of your permanent resident paperwork should accompany the application or the application agreement statement.
- A copy of your current passport.
- If you hold a visa and/or I-20 provide a copy along with application materials.
- Verification of sufficient funds to cover the first year of enrollment or affidavit of support from a bank or sponsor is required.
- A completed UNC School of the Arts Financial Statement Form must be completed by the applicant and can be accessed on www.uncsa.edu/admissions/guidelines.
- All required materials must be on file for the applicant to be reviewed by the Admissions Review Committee. No incomplete files will be reviewed.
- The Admissions Review Committee (the Office of Admissions, Undergraduate Academic/High School Academic Program and Student Life) will review applicant files that are recommended for acceptance and make the final admission decision.
- If submitting an online application, print, sign and mail to the Office of Admissions immediately after submitting the application the
Application Agreement Statement.
- Complete and sign the Provision of Social Security Number form provided with the application.
- Complete the top section of the Mandatory Information Form, sign and give the form to your guidance counselor or college advisor. If currently not enrolled in school, the form may be given to an employer, mentor, instructor, etc.
- Signatures of family members or legal guardians will not be accepted. Form is required of ALL APPLICANTS.
- For your records keep copies of the application and all materials mailed to the Office of Admissions. Items can get lost in the mail and cannot be returned.
