The School of Dance had a banner year in 2010-11 with exquisite concerts, wonderful student choreography, successful tours and extensive participation in the smash hit all-school musical, Oklahoma! Students danced the original choreography of Agnes de Mille in a stunning re-creation of the original 1943 Broadway production, which played to record crowds in a two-week run. Other highlights: Fall Dance featuring a Doug Elkins retrospective, 14 beautiful Nutcracker performances, and repertory in Winter and Spring that included work by Balanchine, Petipa, Nikolais, Feld, Kudelka, Keigwin, Oberdorff, and members of our faculty.
The 2011-12 year promises to be even more exciting, with a new calendar and curriculum as UNCSA moves to a semester system. Plans include having the dynamic Hubbard Street 2 in residence, working and performing with our students. Other possible repertory may include works by George Balanchine, Merce Cunningham, and José Limón. Swan Lake (second act) will be performed in Spring Dance with a live orchestra. Several prominent UNCSA alumni will be creating new works on our students, and ballet superstar José Manuel Carreno will be guest teaching for a month. Fasten your seatbelts for another spectacular year in the School of Dance!
