"The Taming of the Shrew"
The Master of Fine Arts professional training program is open to college graduates who wish to specialize in one of four design concentrations (Costume Design, Scene Design, Sound Design, or Wig and Makeup Design), or one of five production concentrations (Costume Technology, Scene Painting, Stage Automation, Stage Properties, or Technical Direction,) and in Performing Arts Management. The M.F.A. is earned in a three-year conservatory program.
To be eligible for the degree, a student must successfully complete a minimum of 60 semester hours of graduate credit. Students will be placed in classes according to abilities demonstrated by their portfolio, placement test or courses taken previously as indicated by transcripts. Most students will need three years to complete the program.
In their final year, students will complete a fully documented thesis production from either a design or technical point of view. The production will actually be produced and presented before the public. Documentation will include, but not be limited to, historical period research, design concepts, renderings, color samples, paint elevations, complete construction and mechanical drawings, cost estimations, schedules, and photographs of the completed production.
Evaluation of career potential will be an ongoing process, and students will be invited to continue in the program only as long as they demonstrate substantial growth toward artistic excellence. A portfolio showing will be made at the end of each year.
