D&P Students Receive Major Honors and Awards During 2011

Once again, 2011 was another very strong year for the students from D&P. As has become the tradition over the last few years, students from D&P have won a host of both national and international design and technical theatre awards. Following is the list of these talented students.

U.S. Institute for Theatre Technology’s (USITT) Oren Parker Award: Brooke Robbins
A juried award for best undergraduate set design student in the nation

USITT’s Young Designers Forum
A juried selection of the top 15 graduating design students in the nation. This award is typically only given to graduate-level (master’s degree) students. However, once again this year, two of our undergraduate design students received this prestigious honor, and more than 25 percent of the total awards in this category went to D&P students. Students receiving this award exhibited their work at the USITT National Conference.

Shayla Henry – 3rd year MFA - Costume Design
Jonathan Goldman – 4th year BFA - Lighting Design
Brooke Robbins – 4th year BFA - Set Design (Oren Parker Award gets an automatic spot)

USITT Young Technicians Forum
A juried selection of the top 10 graduating entertainment technology students in the nation. This award is typically only given to graduate-level (master’s degree) students.  However, once again this year, two of our undergraduate students received this prestigious honor, and an impressive 50 percent of the total awards in this category went to D&P students.  Students receiving this award exhibited their work at the USITT National Conference.

Hemsley Lighting Portfolio Review at Lincoln Center
A juried selection of graduating lighting students, this competition is predominantly an event limited to graduate-level students, but our undergrad lighting design students once again made a strong and competitive showing in this major lighting competition.

Prague Quadrennial – American Student Exhibit
Held once every four years in Prague, Czech Republic, the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space is a the world´s largest performance design event – a presentation of contemporary work in a variety of performance design disciplines and genres including costume, stage, lighting, sound design, and theatre architecture for dance, opera, drama, site-specific, multi-media performances, and performance art.  Only the top design students from around the world are invited to exhibit their work.  D&P was fortunate to send eight students to this world-class design event.

Design Showcase West, Los Angeles
The ninth annual Design Showcase West held at UCLA, the only national entertainment design showcase on the West Coast, features the work of students graduating from the nation’s top university design programs, including UCLA; California Institute of the Arts; UC San Diego; NYU; University of Missouri, Kansas City; UC Davis; the University of Texas, Austin; UC Irvine; and the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Exhibits range from costume design to set, sound and lighting design.

Design Showcase West is hosted by the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television; the Costume Designers Guild, Local 892; the United Scenic Artists, Local 829; and the Art Directors Guild, Local 800. The Showcase is attended by entertainment producers, directors and A-list designers who are looking for new talent.  UNCSA’s School of Design and
