David Lombard Harrison, General Counsel

David Lombard Harrison is currently general counsel of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and adjunct professor of law at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law, teaching Copyright and the Music Industry.

He began his legal career as law clerk to Justice James H. Brickley in the Michigan Supreme Court. He then practiced trial and appellate litigation and business transactions as a partner in a Grand Rapids, Michigan law firm. He served as assistant general counsel for Central Michigan University before joining the 17-campus University of North Carolina from 2001 to 2015, as associate vice president for legal affairs.

Harrison is licensed to practice law in Michigan and North Carolina, in the 4th and 6th Federal Judicial Circuits, and as a member of the Tribal Bars of the Saginaw-Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indian Tribe.

He has a B.A. in philosophy from Grand Valley State University, and a J.D. from the University of Toledo College of Law. He also studied at the University of Vienna, Austria.

Harrison’s board experience includes the board of directors of the National Association of College and University Attorneys, the Triangle Intellectual Property Lawyers Association, and the Town of Carrboro Human Services Commission.

He has published Law Review articles and papers and has made presentations nationally  on various topics, including intellectual property, music, online education, social media, privacy, and research.

He has also published monthly essays and articles for two national outdoor magazines, was contributing editor for River Explorer Magazine, a newspaper and magazine cartoonist, visual artist, and performer and composer on a record album.

He currently plays tenor, baritone, and concert ukulele -- remarkably well, mind you, but still -- the ukulele. He plays tenor guitar and cavaquinho.

Harrison’s legal specialties include higher education law, nonprofit organizations, intellectual property, copyright, arts law, the entrepreneurial campus, employment, and regulatory compliance.

Amanda G. Balwah, Executive Assistant to the General Counsel

Ms. Balwah received her Bachelor of Arts in American Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she participated in several internships that sparked her interest in higher education, nonprofit administration and community development.  In 2009, she received her Master of Arts in Nonprofit Management from the Norcross Graduate School at High Point University.  Ms. Balwah first came to the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in 2005 as the Administrative Manager of the Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts.  She joined the Office of the General Counsel, and became Secretary to the University, in December 2010.
