Audition Process

To obtain an audition for the A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute, you must submit the following:

  • A cover letter concisely stating your career goals and what you hope to receive from a graduate or post-graduate training program in opera as well as your preferred audition date and location (New York, Chicago, or Winston-Salem).
  • Transcripts from all secondary institutions you may have attended. Transcripts must be sent directly from the institution.
  • 3 Letters of Recommendation from professionals in the field of opera
  • Up-to-date Resume
  • Recent Head Shot
  • Mandatory Information Form — This will be sent to you via email once we have received your materials.
  • MM applicants: A pre-screening CD, DVD, MP3 file or link consisting of 2 contrasting arias.
  • PAC applicants: A pre-screening CD, DVD, MP3 file or link consisting of 4 arias representing at least 3 languages.

 

PLEASE DO NOT APPLY TO THE UNC SCHOOL OF THE ARTS. THERE IS NO FORMAL APPLICATION TO RECEIVE AN AUDITION. YOU WILL BE ASKED TO APPLY IF YOU ARE ADVANCED TO THE FINAL ROUND OF CONSIDERATION.

We are not accepting applications from Sopranos for the 2018-19 academic year.

Deadlines and Audition Dates

Audition Request Deadline — All materials are due by: Dec. 1, 2017
Applicants will be notified of their audition status by: Dec. 19, 2017
2018 Audition Dates

Chicago — Feb. 12, 2018
New York — Feb. 18, 2018
Winston-Salem — Feb. 3, 10, 25, 26, 2018

Decisions — Candidates will be informed of the Institute's decision by March 31, 2018.

Audition Requirements

Auditions will be held in two parts. The first part will be the singing audition. After your audition, the committee will decide if a call back should be scheduled for the same day. At the call back you will have the opportunity to work with faculty on musical, diction and dramatic aspects of your presentation. All applicants will be tested on basic musicianship skills, including sight-reading, keyboard, and language during the call back.

Master of Music Auditions

  • Five selections of contrasting style in four languages; English, French, German** and Italian. (**Russian or Czech may be substituted for German.)
  • Three of the selections must be opera arias.
  • One of the selections must be written after 1950.
  • No prescreening required.

Professional Artist Certificate Auditions

  • Seven selections of contrasting style in four languages: English, French, German** and Italian. (**Russian or Czech may be substituted for German.)
  • Five selections must be opera arias.
  • One selection must be from an oratorio.
  • One of the selections must be written after 1950.
