I. Purpose

UNCSA is committed to equality of opportunity for all students. In keeping with UNCSA’s commitment to not discriminate against any student on the basis of religion, UNCSA provides suitable accommodations for religious observance.

II. Scope

This regulation applies to all UNCSA students.

III. Definitions

A. “Religious Observance” means religious holidays, holy days, or other similar observances required by the student’s religion that necessitates absence from class.

IV. Regulation

A. Each UNCSA student may utilize two excused absences per academic year for religious observances.

B. If a student believes there is a discrepancy between the instructor’s exaction of a penalty for unsatisfactory class attendance and the stated regulation, or that there is an extenuating circumstance that may affect the instructor’s decision, then he or she should first make a request to the instructor. If desired, the student may further appeal to the Dean of the Art School or Academic Program, and finally to the Provost.

Procedure 801

I. Notice

A. Students must submit written requests for religious observances to each instructor of an affected course no later than three weeks after the first class day of the term.

B. In exceptional circumstances, the instructor may waive this notice requirement.

C. The instructor should forward this information to their Dean for tracking purposes.

II. Course Work Make-up

A. When appropriate notice is provided by a student, the instructor will work with the student to provide a reasonable means of making up course work missed.

B. With regard to any test or other assignment that a student would miss due to a required religious observance, faculty members may require the student to complete the test or assignment in advance of the originally scheduled date.
