End on a High Note: Better Endings for Classes and Courses
Most of us have seen a number of tips on what to do on the first day of class, but we don’t think about the importance of the last day as an opportunity for students to reflect on and fully synthesize their learning. This workshop offers suggestions that might make the closing of your course as memorable as the opening.

Teaching with Your Mouth Shut Book Discussion
Don Finkel, author of Teaching with Your Mouth Shut, argues that “great teachers” do far more for students than “tell” them what they did not previously know. In fact, they do little of that because what is told is simply not retained for a significant period of time.

In the first session, facilitators will provoke reflection on some of the many ways teaching can be organized and encourage participants to reflect critically on their experiences teaching “with their mouths shut”. In the second session, participants will share their new ideas for incorporating Finkel’s ideas in their own courses.

Fridays, November 10 & 17, 2017
