Sir James Galway, the living legend of the flute, regarded as both the supreme interpreter on the instrument and a consummate entertainer whose appeal crosses all musical boundaries, will present a master class to UNCSA students and open to the community. Join Sir Galway and Lady Galway as they visit our campus in early April.

UNCSA Cantata Singers: Allbritten Does All-Britten
Conductor James Allbritten leads the Cantata Singers through some of Britten’s masterworks for chorus. Included will be his festival cantata Rejoice in the Lamb to a text by Christopher Smart, A Shepherd’s Carol with text by his friend W.H. Auden, and the beautiful Five Flower Songs for a capella chorus.

UNCSA Jazz Ensemble
The Jazz Ensemble will be joined by world-renowned trumpet soloist Allen Vizzutti as guest artist. Mr. Vizzutti has performed in over 60 countries at major jazz festivals and with the world’s foremost symphony orchestras and jazz groups, recorded with top names in the entertainment industry, and can be heard on more than 150 motion picture sound tracks.

Spring Dance Concert
The Schools of Dance, Music, and Design & Production present a vivid kaleidoscope of invention and
rediscovery in a bold 4-piece concert inspired by The Rite of
Spring. Beginning with Shen Wei’s contemporary envisioning of Rite set to Stravinsky’s original 2-piano version, the
production draws from the most provocative works of the Ballets Russes with an
orchestral performance of Afternoon of a Faun, a
historic re-creation of Debussy’s Jeux, with
choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky (as reconstructed by Millicent Hodson) and sets
by Leon Bakst, concluding with Borodin’s sensuous Polovtsian
Dances from Prince Igor featuring the
UNCSA choreographic debut of the new Dean of Dance and famed ballerina Susan
Jaffe. Chancellor John Mauceri leads the UNCSA
Orchestra.

UNCSA Symphony Orchestra: Symphonic Dances
Chancellor John Mauceri leads the UNCSA Symphony Orchestra in a concert that celebrates the enduring legacy of the Ballets Russes, with Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, and Jeux – his final masterpiece which premiered one hundred years ago in Paris. The program includes Borodin’s colorful Polovtsian Dances, the second suite from Ravel’s sensuous Daphnis and Chloe as well as the world concert premiere of music alumnus Leo Hurley’s impressionistic score to the 2012 UNCSA dance film MOLLY UNDER THE MOON, conducted by Michael Dwinell.
