UNCSA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA – WAGNER AND HIS WORLD
Conducted by James Allbritten

Subscription package date: October 12, 7:30 p.m. at Stevens Center
Pre-show reception for subcribers only: 6:45 p.m., 10th floor, Stevens Center

An evening of tempestuous 19th century works. Virtuoso Franz Liszt combined his pianistic skills with his restless pen to compose Totentanz, a fantasy on the Dies Irae chant, which reflects the composer’s search for new sound colors for piano and orchestra. Artist faculty member Dmitri Shteinberg braves the daunting soloist part of this technically dazzling work. Liszt’s future son-in-law, Richard Wagner, changed the face of opera with his bold, passionate sound. To celebrate his bicentennial, the concert closes with the “Prelude and Liebestod” from his opera Tristan and Isolde. UNCSA alumna Carter Scott joins the orchestra to perform “Isolde.”

James Allbritten, music director; Steven LaCosse, stage director

Subscription package date: January 31, 7:30 p.m. at Stevens Center

Join the Fletcher Institute as it presents the many romantic adventures of Hoffmann, a poet searching for love only to find that it lies just beyond his reach. At every turn his actions are thwarted by a devilish character who turns up in Paris, Munich and Venice. Offenbach’s glorious score is one of the most expressive in all of 19th century French Opera.

“It is hard to determine what shone most brightly – the superb singing of the leads, the colorful sets, the striking lighting, the innovative costumes or the magnificent orchestration, beautifully rendered by the [student] musicians in the pit, decisively led by James Allbritten, director of the Fletcher Opera Institute.”
From Classical Voice of North Carolina’s (CVNC.org) review of UNCSA’s 2013 production of Giacomo Puccini’s opera La Rondine.
