The Gerald Freedman Theatre, named in honor of Dean Emeritus of the School of Drama Gerald Freedman, is located on the upper ground level of Alex Ewing Performance Place and is similar in design to the Circle Repertory Theatre in New York and the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis. It is an optimal performance space for drama with 358 seats that surround a thrust stage on three sides. No seat is more than 36 feet away from the stage. Freedman Theatre hosts performances by the School of Drama, as well as concerts by the UNCSA Jazz Ensemble, A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute and other special campus events.
