WANDA PLEMMONS NAMED OUTSTANDING TEACHER IN THE ARTS
BY UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA SCHOOL OF THE ARTS


WINSTON-SALEM – Wanda Plemmons of Winston-Salem has been named “Outstanding Teacher in the Arts” by the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA).

Plemmons received her award at the school’s annual commencement ceremony, held May 30 at the Stevens Center in Winston-Salem. She was presented her award by Ryan Hill, assistant dean and general manager of the UNCSA School of Dance.

Wanda Plemmons serves as director and owner of the Academy of Dance Arts, Inc., where she studied ballet at a young age. She continued her training at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Plemmons has performed with the Winston-Salem Civic Ballet, North Carolina Governor’s School and UNCSA productions.

She served as a dance consultant and has choreographed numerous pieces for local concerts including RJR’s “The Vantage,” the City of Winston-Salem, Disney’s “Kid Jam” starring Sam Wright and Raven-Symone, and Paramount Studios.

She has also been a guest teacher for Wake Forest University and the North Carolina Governor’s School.

Currently, Plemmons serves on the board of The Associates of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. She assisted in founding the Alumni Association and served as the president of the Alumni Association for several years. She was deeply involved in developing the Alumni Guest Artist Series. She has also held membership on the Chancellor’s Search Committee and the Governor’s Choice for Teaching Excellence Committee. Additionally, Plemmons has served on the President’s Advisory Council for Small Business Leaders of the United States.

The University of North Carolina School of the Arts is the first state-supported, residential school of its kind in the nation. Established as the North Carolina School of the Arts by the N.C. General Assembly in 1963, UNCSA opened in Winston-Salem (“The City of the Arts”) in 1965 and became part of the University of North Carolina system in 1972. More than 1,100 students from middle school through graduate school train for careers in the arts in five professional schools: Dance, Design and Production (including a Visual Arts Program), Drama, Filmmaking, and Music. UNCSA is the state’s only public arts conservatory, dedicated entirely to the professional training of talented students in the performing, visual and moving image arts.
