How We Are Unique
In today's music world, you have to be both highly skilled on your instrument and versatile in your approach. This means combining an expert technique with an open-minded exploration of all types of music.
SummerStrings is the only program in the state that can offer both top-level classical training and exhilarating experimentation in multiple genres.
Come join us for a two-week intensive like none other! Bring your game to a new level, and your level to a new game!
Students are provided numerous opportunities to perform both in masterclass and in recital on our weekly Student Showcase Concerts. This summer we are adding a special Mock-Audition event to give students the opportunity to perform audition rep for their peers. As well, the SummerStrings faculty perform each week on faculty recitals in Watson Hall.
The primary focus during the first week of SummerStrings will be on solo repertoire. Each day will begin with simultaneous masterclasses for each instrument, in combination with individual practice time. Students will also receive one private lesson per week. Our afternoons will consist of daily chamber music coachings and rehearsals. Every SummerStrings participant will be placed in a chamber group which will perform on our final Showcase Concert in UNCSA's magnificent Watson Hall.
Our second week will focus largely on improvisation, in collaboration with visiting artist Christian Howes. These will include workshops from his Creative Strings Academy on tonal improvisation, free improvisation, and the internalization of harmony, voice-leading, scales, and modes. Chamber music coaching will continue throughout the second week, as will private instrumental lessons.
SummerStrings also provides daily yoga or Alexander classes, and Special Topics Seminars on a variety of subjects, such as Bow Technique, Intonation, Chamber Music Rehearsal Technique, Performance Anxiety, and Marketing and Social Media.
