Welcome to the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where summer offers aspiring musicians of all ages rich learning experiences and an abundance of opportunities to perform. Students are immersed in an intensive and supportive musical environment with faculty who are both world-class performers and dedicated teachers. Wonderful concert halls, an extensive music library and a conservatory campus that brings together students and teachers in all the arts make this a one-of-a-kind summer program.
Led by UNCSA’s renowned artist-faculty, Summer 2013 offerings include master classes, chamber music, private lessons, technique development, and more. Student performances and evening faculty concerts round out the well-designed intensives.
An audition is required for admission to the Summer Music Workshops (except for the guitar workshop - see description below). Click here and follow audition instructions. The priority audition deadline is April 15, 2013.
Music programs are for age 12 and up.
Organ Workshop
June 23 to June 29
The UNCSA Summer Organ Workshop is designed for both the beginning organist (with sufficient piano background) and the more advanced organist of high school age. The workshop will delve into topics including both standard organ repertoire and sacred music playing skills with a focus on solid hymn playing techniques and basic improvisation, practice techniques, registration, pedal technique and more. The workshop will feature two stylistically different organs: UNCSA's Fisk, Op. 75 (III/35 voices; mechanical) and First Baptist Church's Grooms & Payne (V/97 ranks; electro-pneumatic). Other local historical organs will also be toured and demonstrated as part of a local organ crawl, including instruments E.M. Skinner (1928), Tannenberg (1800), Erben (1830), Flentrop (1957). Summer Vocal Intensive
June 23 to July 13
Students in the Vocal Workshop explore a variety of musical styles, ranging from classical art song to opera and musical theatre, through a program that includes classes in voice, movement, and acting. Students receive voice master classes, small group voice lessons, movement classes, acting/dialogue coaching, scene staging, sight singing classes, Alexander Technique, in addition to private time with a major voice instructor. Faculty includes UNCSA artist-teacher of voice, Marion Pratnicki, and A. J. Fletcher Opera Institute Fellow, Amanda Moody, with masterclass guest artists from the UNCSA School of Music Faculty and the A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute.
Guitar Workshop
July 7 to July 13
Designed for students of varied levels, this workshop provides private lessons and master classes in days filled with practice, listening, rehearsal and performance. The 2013 Guitar workshop is called Nothing But Nylon and welcomes experienced classical guitarists, experienced steel string and electric guitarists, as well as beginners, with ensemble work, improvisation, composition, technique and a wide range of styles featured. No audition is required; students wishing to participate in ensemble work will need to send a playing sample as detailed in the workshop link below. Faculty includes UNCSA artist-teacher Joseph Pecoraro and guest artists Andrew York, Daniel Seriff, Luke Payne, David Oakes and Ed Stephenson. Harp Workshop
July 7 to July 26
Aspiring harpists will enjoy a rich musical experience focused on harp technique, musicianship and communication skills, practice techniques and performance practices in a friendly, supportive atmosphere. The daily schedule includes private lessons, harp ensemble, chamber music rehearsals, master classes, special music topics, individual practice, performance opportunities and faculty recitals. Students will be placed in ensembles according to their skill level. Outings and evening concerts round out the program. UNCSA Faculty Artist Jacquelyn Bartlett will lead the three-week workshop. Harp students will also participate in the Chamber Music on the Hill chamber summer intensive (see below).
Chamber Music on the Hill
July 7 to July 26
Chamber Music on the Hill is a rigorous and concentrated program integrating the study of chamber music with private lessons. Mentored and coached each day by active performing artists, students quickly grow and mature in their performance abilities. The three-week time period allows for numerous master classes and public concerts, providing immeasurable performance experience. Applications for the Chamber Music Institute are being accepted in violin, viola, violoncello, harp, woodwind and piano for instrumentalists between the ages of 12 - 25. Faculty includes Sarah Johnson, violin; Karen Collins, violin; Eric Koontz, viola; Grace Anderson, violoncello; Nancy Green, violoncello; and others.

Scholarships
Please be aware that our scholarship resources are very limited. Your first resource for scholarships should be organizations in your community such as Rotary, booster clubs, churches, foundations and businesses.
A limited number of partial scholarships and fee waivers will be offered for UNCSA summer music workshops based on the following criteria:
Proficiency in your instrument as evidenced in your audition
Recommendation from your music teacher attesting to your accomplishments in repertory, music theory and potential for musical growth
Instrumentation needs within your chosen workshop

* Priority Registration guarantees your place in your chosen program. Registrations received after May 1, 2013 are accepted on a case-by-case basis as residence hall space allows.
Space in each program is limited. Registrations received after a program has filled will be placed on a waiting list pending withdrawals.
Cancellation terms
$300 non-refundable deposit due at registration – check or credit card
Student withdrawal by June 1: refund of one-half of total paid, less non-refundable deposit
Student withdrawal after June 1: no refunds
In the event a program is cancelled by UNCSA, payments will be refunded in full
