Welcome to Studio Village, UNCSA’s unique on-campus movie set, where high school students and rising college freshmen immerse themselves in the exciting world of filmmaking. The conservatory’s dedication to developing the whole filmmaker extends to the summer program. As a student here you will learn about ‒ and experience first-hand ‒ screenwriting, cinematography, directing, producing and digital editing. You’ll gain an understanding of the creative, analytical, organizational and cooperative elements of movie-making and make your own short film, all with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, professional instruction from our artist-teachers, enthusiastic coaching and feedback from young teaching assistants, and the collaborative efforts of your peers.
Rising Filmmakers
Open to students with no prior experience. Students develop a three- to five-minute screenplay of their own, or choose from an existing library and prepare a script for production. All students’ films will be put in production. All students have the opportunity to act in key capacities, including director, producer, cinematographer or editor, and other crew positions, including script supervisor, boom operator, gaffer, grip, and electrician. They also act in fellow students’ projects. Along with making films, participants watch and learn to analyze films from the School’s extensive film archive, one of the largest film collections in the nation, and attend sessions on visual and editing strategies. The program ends with a film festival at which all student projects are screened.
Advanced Filmmakers
Open to returning students and those who have completed year-long intermediate high school film or video courses. At this stage most students have identified their chosen field, e.g. screenwriting, cinematography, producing, editing or directing. This workshop affords them opportunities to direct or crew multiple times in their particular area of interest to gain expertise and experience. Students review their previous studies, attend specialty classes, and pre-produce projects they have developed either before the summer program or in the first half of the program. After completing safety tests, they become part of close-knit film crews and direct their projects on stage or at an on-campus location. Students in this advanced program are encouraged to avail themselves of consultation and one-on-one training with the instructor in their area of interest.
New faculty information will be posted soon.
