Welcome to the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where summer offers aspiring musicians of all ages rich learning experiences and an abundance of opportunities to perform. Students are immersed in an intensive and supportive musical environment with faculty who are both world-class performers and dedicated teachers. Wonderful concert halls, an extensive music library and a conservatory campus that brings together students and teachers in all the arts make this a one-of-a-kind summer program.
Led by UNCSA’s renowned artist-faculty, Summer 2012 offerings include master classes, chamber music, private lessons, technique development, and more. Student performances and evening faculty concerts round out the well-designed intensives.
The Summer Festival Jazz Repertory Orchestra at UNCSA
June 24-July 13
Unlike any other summer jazz program, the Summer Festival Jazz Repertory Orchestra at UNCSA puts students on-stage and in the spotlight. New this year, the 17-piece ensemble offers participants the opportunity to learn and perform major repertoire of the most renowned big bands and jazz legends, both traditional and progressive. Advanced college and graduate jazz students* will come together to rehearse and perform five full public concerts over the three-week program. Participants will be immersed in the critical professional skills of sight-reading and concentrated performance preparation, as well as learning an extensive collection of the most popular and important big band jazz music. Piano Workshop
June 24-July 13
Designed for students of varied levels, the Piano Workshop provides private lessons, master classes and chamber music along with opportunities for practice, performance, listening and rehearsal. Faculty for the Piano Workshop will be UNCSA Artist-Teacher David Winkelman.
Composition/Music Technology Workshop
June 24 to July 13
Students will create art music, music for film, music for dance and will work with multiple media. Integrating the study of composition with music technology, students will create works using the latest digital technology and will also work with live performers. Each student will receive individual composition lessons, courses in composition techniques, music technology, orchestration, harmony and counterpoint, and a weekly master class. String Chamber Music Institute (Violin, Viola, Cello)
June 24 to July 13
The Chamber Music Institute is a rigorous and concentrated program integrating the study of chamber music with private lessons. Mentored and coached each day by active performing artists, students quickly grow and mature in their performance abilities. The three-week time period allows for numerous master classes and public concerts, providing immeasurable performance experience. Applications for the Chamber Music Institute are being accepted in violin, viola, and violoncello. Vocal Workshop
June 24 to July 13
Students in the Vocal Workshop explore a variety of musical styles, ranging from classical art song to opera and musical theatre, through a program that includes classes in voice, movement, and acting. Students receive voice master classes, small group voice lessons, movement classes, acting/dialogue coaching, scene staging, sight singing classes, Alexander Technique, in addition to private time with a major voice instructor. Faculty includes UNCSA artist-teacher of voice Marion Pratnicki, Mary Siebert and others.
Two-Week Workshops
Clarinet Workshop
June 24 to July 6
For two weeks, students will immerse themselves in the study of clarinet with UNCSA clarinet professor Oskar Espina Ruiz. Students will learn practicing and studying techniques; relaxation; diaphragm control; circular breathing; tonguing and double-tonguing; and many other clarinet techniques leading to expressive and effortless performances. This two-week program includes private lessons, orchestral excerpts, college audition preparation, performance skills, clinics and master classes on a variety of related topics. Recital performances and chamber music collaboration with other summer workshop students complete this intensive and personal program of study.
Guitar Workshop
July 1 to July 13
Designed for students of varied levels, this workshop provides private lessons and master classes in days filled with practice, listening, rehearsal and performance. Faculty includes UNCSA artist-teacher Joseph Pecoraro and guests. For more information, visit http://www.uncsaguitar.com.
Harp Workshop
June 24 – July 6
Aspiring harpists will enjoy a rich musical experience focused on harp technique, musicianship and communication skills, practice techniques and performance practices in a friendly, supportive atmosphere. The daily schedule includes private lessons, harp ensemble, chamber music rehearsals, master classes, special music topics, individual practice, performance opportunities and faculty recitals. Students will be placed in ensembles according to their skill level. Outings and evening concerts round out the program. UNCSA Faculty Artist Jacquelyn Bartlett will lead the two-week workshop.

Bassoon and Oboe Workshop
Students can immerse themselves in the study of all things double reed with UNCSA bassoon professor Saxton Rose and oboe professor Robin Driscoll. This intense one-week program includes multiple private lessons, reed making classes, orchestral excerpt and college audition preparation, performance skills clinics and master classes on a variety related topics. Double Bass Workshop
Daily technique classes, bass ensemble, orchestral excerpt classes, and solo master classes will be combined with ample opportunities for one-on-one instruction with artist-teacher Paul Sharpe. This workshop also addresses motivation, practice techniques, memorization, improvisation, and performance anxiety. The opportunity to focus solely on the bass for one week will leave participants inspired and significantly improved as bassists. Percussion Workshop
This workshop will include percussion ensemble, private lessons, and workshops in ensemble and solo percussion, West African drumming, tabla, timpani, keyboard percussion, audition preparation, and Alexander Technique. The workshop will also include performances by the Philidor Percussion Group and the student percussion ensemble. Led by UNCSA Artist-Faculty John Beck, the percussion workshop faculty will also include members of the Philidor Percussion Group, Rob Falvo, Wiley Sykes and Peter Zlotnick. Organ Workshop
The UNCSA Summer Organ Workshop is designed for both the beginning organist (with sufficient piano background) and the more advanced organist of high school age. The workshop will delve into topics including both standard organ repertoire and sacred music playing skills with a focus on solid hymn playing techniques and basic improvisation. The workshop will feature two stylistically different organs: UNCSA's Fisk, Op. 75 (III/35 voices; mechanical) and First Baptist Church's Grooms & Payne (V/97 ranks; electro-pneumatic). Other local historical organs will also be toured and demonstrated as part of a local organ crawl, including instruments E.M. Skinner (1928), Tannenberg (1800), Erben (1830), Flentrop (1957). Saxophone Workshop
Led by UNCSA saxophone professor Taimur Sullivan, students will spend a week immersed in master classes, lessons, chamber music, jazz, and special topics classes. Saxophonists will work on tone, technique, musicianship, stage presence, improvisation, All-State repertoire, and more. New practice skills will enable them to continue improving throughout the year. This intensive learning experience will be enriched by student performance opportunities and evening faculty concerts. * Priority Registration guarantees your place in your chosen program. Registrations received after May 1, 2012 are accepted on a case-by-case basis as residence hall space allows.
Space in each program is limited. Registrations received after a program has filled will be placed on a waiting list pending withdrawals.
Cancellation terms
$300 non-refundable deposit due at registration – check or credit card (credit cards accepted starting February 15)
Student withdrawal by June 1: refund of one-half of total paid, less non-refundable deposit
Student withdrawal after June 1: no refunds
In the event a program is cancelled by UNCSA, payments will be refunded in full
