Welcome to the University of North Carolina School of the Arts summer intensive in Visual Arts. Here you will find a demanding and stimulating program designed to unlock your artistic talent and provide you with the skills and tools of the visual arts. During studio classes in drawing, design, and sculpture, you’ll explore the philosophical as well as the mechanical aspects of the art experience. Beyond the studio you’ll dive into historical art concepts and practices and contemporary imagery through slide shows, lectures, library assignments and field trips. You’ll participate in classroom critiques throughout the four-week session, and in a gallery exhibition and reception for families and friends as a grand finale. No prior experience or portfolio is required ‒ just your serious passion for developing your own artistic understanding and expression.
Drawing and Design
Both realistic and non-objective themes are used to develop deliberate drawing skills. Studies of value relationships, line quality, and perspective facilitate artistic interpretation. Projects are designed to build a firm foundation in compositional control. Drawing exercises done in class often develop into more experiential, completed works that shape an individual’s perception of the aesthetic boundaries of drawing.
Design classes provide an overview of the mechanical and creative principles of two-dimensional design construction. Students learn about visual space, color theory, movement and proportion, and explore critical recognition and control of these elements.
Sculpture
Students use a variety of concepts, media and techniques to plan and articulate three-dimensional space. Along with hands-on experience, there is an emphasis on sketchbooks, journals and the development of a vocabulary to help in understanding and analyzing artwork. Lectures, discussions and research projects enable students to investigate current and historical trends and styles in sculpture. By the end of the program, students will have made progress toward developing their personal expression in form.
