The dance “Surrendering in a Champion’s World” was created as an image-laden exploration of narcissism and competition in contemporary culture. The work was highly visual and provocative, incorporating all the theatrical elements: choreography, set design, lighting, and costumes. The piece contained two time-lines at once: contemporary society and that which is ancient archetypal or timeless. The dance ensemble consisted of six “Brides” the introspective side of self-absorption and six “Lookers” the extroverted side of self-obsession. There is one solo figure, “Sophia,” the witness or the “Seer”, representing the interior journey toward wholeness.

The set design consisted of a slightly raked stage with a mirrored floor, a mirrored back wall, and a plexiglass front with panes to separate the dancers from the audience. The particular combination of specific movements, set design and overall concept gives the audience a sense of voyeurism. The multi-reflective surfaces surrounding the dancers creates layers of images that are both compelling and haunting. The film is comprised of five sections and is thirty minutes long.

The music in the piece is quite diverse as it moves from act to act. The music ranges from medieval chants to techno pop, and on to a classical chorale. The sound takes us from the contemplative to the contemporary and leaves us with the heart.
