
Mark Hough
Mark Hough was appointed Chief Advancement Officer by Chancellor John Mauceri on Aug. 30, 2012, effective Sept. 24. Hough is the first alumnus to serve in the position and the first alumnus to serve as a member of the school's Executive Council. He received
his B.F.A. in Acting from the School of Drama in 1979.
He has served as President of Hough and Associates,
a full-range management, board development, presenting and fund-raising
consulting business serving nonprofit organizations throughout the world.
Hough came to UNCSA from the Orlando Ballet in Florida, where he was Executive
Director. Before joining
Orlando Ballet, Hough was Executive Director of Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater,
an internationally renowned, award-winning Equity theatre company in Cape Cod,
Mass. He has also served as President and Chief Executive Officer of
the State Theatre in New Brunswick, N.J. Before joining the
State Theatre, Hough was Chief Development Officer at the Whitney Museum of Art
in New York, N.Y., and Director of Development at Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC),
the fourth largest theatre in the United States, which produces a season of
plays on and off-Broadway.
Hough also served
as Director of Development Operations for American Ballet Theatre, considered to
be America’s greatest dance company, in New York, N.Y. Other of his positions
have included Executive Director of the Paramount Center for the Arts in
Peekskill, N.Y., and Managing Director of the David Gordon/Pick Up Company in
New York, N.Y. In addition, he has produced dance and theatre internationally.
Hough has served as
adjunct professor in fund raising, marketing and arts management at the Yale
School of Drama, New York University, Christopher Newport University, and Seton
Hall University. He has lectured at Brooklyn College, the New School, and the
State University of New York at Purchase.
Hough graduated
from The Gunnery School in Washington, Conn. In addition to receiving his B.F.A.
from the School of the Arts, Hough has completed studies toward an M.F.A. in
Performing Arts Management from Brooklyn College.
The Chief Advancement Officer oversees fund raising (development), communications and marketing, and alumni. The CAO is also the principle liaison to the University of North Carolina School of the Arts Foundation, Inc., an independently governed nonprofit that invests and manages private gifts to UNCSA. The CAO coordinates communications regarding acceptance, investment, and use of private donations to UNCSA with the controller of the Foundation, who reports directly to the Foundation’s Board of Directors.
