FIGHTING PICKLES MASCOT CHOSEN

In the spring of 2010, the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) conducted a contest to create the new UNCSA Fighting Pickles mascot to represent our school.  The contest began on March 1, 2010, and ended on May 21, 2010, with the unveiling of the new mascot in The Pickle Jar on the 3rd floor of Hanes Student Commons on the UNCSA campus.

The competition was open to all UNCSA students, alumni, faculty, staff, and former faculty and staff.  Visual Arts and Costume Design students in the School of Design and Production, as well as Animation students in the School of Filmmaking, were specifically asked to provide submissions.

A total of 27 entries were received by the deadline of April 3, 2010.  The "Pickle Tasters Committee," below, narrowed down the submissions to four finalists.

* Dina Perez, 2nd year graduate student, School of Design and Production

* Eben Zboch, high school junior, School of Design and Production

* John DeKemper, high school junior, School of Design and Production

Finalists were then asked to make final revisions to their entries.

During the week of May 10, 2010, members of the UNCSA community were asked to vote for their favorite to become the new UNCSA Fighting Pickle.  All students, alumni, staff, faculty, and former staff and faculty were allowed one vote per person, and voting was conducted both online and in person. A total of 1,058 votes were tallied.

The design by Dina Perez, a second-year MFA costume design student in the School of Design and Production, claimed 55 percent of all votes to win the competition. The winning mascot was unveiled on May 21, 2010. Scenes from that day follow.
