As the volunteer group known as The Associates celebrate their 40 years of service to the School of the Arts in September, the Archives is proud to share the pages of a scrapbook from the last decade of the 20th Century highlighting their contributions to the school during the Alexander Ewing years.

The theme of this year's Black History Month is "Hallowed Grounds: Sites of African American Memories." The baseball field pictured above, known as Southside Park, was one of the home fields used by the Winston Salem Pond Giants, the town's most prominent black baseball team.

The loss of UNCSA's third Chancellor, Robert C. Suderburg, within a month of his predecessor, Robert E. Ward, left us feeling our age this week and punctuated the fact that UNCSA is approaching its half century mark. The school was barely a decade into its existence when Bob Suderburg arrived; however, his legacy is forever engraved in our history.

UNCSA's beloved former Chancellor and friend, Robert Eugene Ward died peacefully at the age of 95 last week. In an effort to remember the man and the context of his time during the first two years of his tenure (Sept 1967 - June 1968), this Time Capsule includes Robert Ward's first President's Report outlining the state of the school in Oct 1967, a report of his first Convocation address in the School's student newspaper, 16 January 1968, and his Commencement address in June 1968.

I recently received a package of ephemera from a dance alum (HS '69 College '71) asking if there was a place in the archives for her clippings and student newspapers. I was delighted to receive them and one item in particular caught my attention. I would like to share it with you as it summarizes very well the impact The NC School of the Arts was making in the dance world two years after opening its doors.
