Camel City Jazz Youth Combos

The Camel City Jazz Youth Combo program is a collaboration between the Camel City Jazz Orchestra and the UNCSA Community Music School. Students in middle and high school can explore their individual voices within a supportive ensemble environment, with a concentration on exploring jazz styles, standard repertoire and beginning improvisation. Professional jazz musicians work with groups of 4 to 8 students in 8 week sessions. The program is open to students who play saxophone, trumpet, clarinet, flute, trombone, piano, bass, guitar and drums. Placement is made by age and audition.

Jazz Combo I

Sundays, 1:15-2:45 p.m.
Start dates: February 4 and April 15, 2018

Learn the basics of jazz improvisation through a performance-based survey of jazz harmony, styles, and repertoire. Topics covered include review of major and minor keys, improvising using pentatonic scales, beginning jazz repertoire. 8 consecutive 1.5 hour classes. Open to piano, bass, guitar and horns. Class size 4 to 8 students. Cost: $175


Jazz Combo II

Sundays, 3-5 p.m.
Start dates: February 4 and April 15, 2018

Learn to play as a small jazz ensemble through study of standard jazz repertoire, while taking your improvisation to the next level through a performance-based survey of jazz language, phrasing, and chord/scale relationships. 8 consecutive weeks of 2 hour classes. Open to horns, bass, piano, guitar, drums and voice. Class size 4 to 6 students. Recorded audition required. Cost: $215
