The Community Music School has been an outreach program of UNCSA since 1976. Located in the Stevens Center in downtown Winston-Salem and on the main UNCSA campus, the school offers a high quality music education to students of all ages and levels of experience. Group courses and private lessons are offered in a wide range of instruments and styles and are taught by some of the area’s top working musicians.

A variety of courses are offered, including introductory chorus classes  and Suzuki Method instruction for our youngest musicians. Students who desire a preparatory experience can combine music theory, ear training and ensemble instruction with individual lessons to craft a challenging, rewarding and joyful program of intensive study.

Private Lessons

For performers at all levels, individual lessons provide guidance and structure to musical discovery. Students who study at the UNCSA Community School benefit from individually tailored instruction from the highest quality teachers. Most of our faculty members hold advanced degrees, and all are expert practitioners in their field. In addition to our quality classical performance offerings, private lessons are available in composition, electronic music production, jazz, Broadway and pop styles.

Group Classes and Summer Day Camps

Group classes and summer day camps in the Community Music School allow students to explore new topics in group settings with their peers.  See our Preparatory Division page for information about group class discounts when registering for a package of instruction.  Our music theory and ear training curriculum for students 2nd grade and up provides the context and understanding to build performance excellence and heightens enjoyment in listening.
