Woodwinds

The UNCSA Community Music School is committed to providing woodwind students at all ages and ability levels with access to the best quality instruction, ensemble opportunities and performance experiences. Teachers are contract or substitute musicians with the Winston-Salem Symphony, Greensboro Symphony, Piedmont Wind Ensemble and with many other professional classical, jazz and world music ensembles. Many hold doctorate degrees and also teach at the collegiate level.

Infant - Kindergarten (5 mo-5yr)

Classes in Recorder are offered for students ages 3 and up (with teacher approval). 

Elementary (6-10yr)

30-minute lessons are available in recorder, Suzuki Flute and other band instruments with teacher approval. 

Elementary students are encouraged to attend the Children's Choral Ensemble (included with no additional charge) and enroll in Group Piano for Young Beginners to build musicality skills. Private lessons for students in grades 4 and under are only recommended in foundational instruments (piano, strings or guitar). 

Students may enroll in the Preparatory Division for a more intensive course of study that includes Royal Conservatory Method music theory classes and ensemble work.

Middle (11-13yr)

45-minute private lessons are available in flute, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon and oboe.

Students will advance from Choral Ensemble I to Choral Ensemble II with teacher approval. 

Students may enroll in the Preparatory Division for a more intensive course of study that includes Royal Conservatory Method music theory classes and ensemble work.

High (14-18yr)

60-minute private lessons are available in flute, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon and oboe.

45-minute piano lessons are encouraged for students to supplement music education, and high school students may attend Musicianship I and II group classes at no additional charge. 

Students may enroll in the Preparatory Division for a more intensive course of study that includes Royal Conservatory Method music theory classes and ensemble work.

Adult (18+)

45 or 60-minute private lessons are available in flute, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon and oboe.

Adults are also encouraged to enroll in Group Piano for Adult Beginners or private piano lessons to supplement their training. All adult students should attend Musicianship I or II (included at no additional charge).
