Doug Griffith

Associate professor of Animatronics Doug Griffith worked at Walt Disney Imagineering for 35 years, bringing some of the world's most beloved  characters to life. As an Imagineer, Griffith provided animation, show concept design, character design/development and animation direction for popular Audio-Animatronics® characters and attractions at Disney Theme Parks around the world. He also served as the creative leader for several technical development projects during his tenure.


  • Produced a comprehensive collection of Audio-Animatronics® education material over a 20 year span, explaining the foundational principals of art form, applied techniques and best practices for creative, engineering, research and development, maintenance and show quality standards teams
  • Selected as Disney Institute's Keynote Speaker on the Art of Audio-Animatronics® animation and delivered additional guest-facing lectures at other venues, including The Disney Cruise Line, Louisiana State University, the University of Central Florida, Ringling College of Art and Design and the United States Naval War College
  • Completed coursework in Character Animation/Film at California Institute of the Arts
  • Completed coursework in Commercial and Fine Art at Shepherd University

Career Highlights

  • Developed the animation techniques for working with A100 animation technology, resulting in more believable movement for high-profile projects, including the Wicked Witch of the West from The Great Movie Ride at Disney's Hollywood Studios, the Pirates of the Caribbean figures at Disneyland Paris, the President Bill Clinton figure at the Hall of Presidents in the Magic Kingdom and numerous figures in The American Adventure attraction at Epcot  
  • Played a key role in developing a new digital process for the design and production of Disney walkaround character heads and costumes, significantly slashing the design and production time while also improving safety and design accuracy
  • Served as creative director for the 2018 Magic Kingdom Pirates of the Caribbean auction scene makeover; introducing Redd, the new female pirate
  • Created the first Audio-Animatronics® figure to ever be installed in a Disney water park, using special weather resistant design elements to produce Duncan the Parrot for Miss Adventure Falls in Walt Disney World's Typhoon Lagoon
