Through Kenan Arts Research Fellowships, the Kenan Institute facilitates inquiry, leads interactions and supports initiatives that identify and track skills and knowledge in leadership, entrepreneurship and innovation in the arts with UNCSA students, graduates, faculty and the field.

Christal Schanes

Christal Schanes (2017-2018)
Christal Schanes is an alumna and faculty member in the UNCSA School of Design & Production. In 2018, she established MEDwigs, a high quality, custom, medical wig-making company for people experiencing hair loss due to a medical treatment that has expanded from a course she developed for D&P. She was also selected to participate in the 2017 Creative Startups Accelerator and was a recipient of the 2017 Chancellor's Artpreneur Creative Startups Grant.

Emily Simoness (2017)
Emily Simoness, an inaugural Kenan Arts Research Fellow, is an innovative arts entrepreneur and founder of SPACE on Ryder Farm, who graduated from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in 2007 with a BFA in acting.

Norman Coates is the Director of Lighting at UNCSA and founder of the Winston-Salem Light Project which expands UNCSA lighting students' knowledge and skills to include projects in architecture and public art.
