Undergraduate Trumpet

Undergraduate Trumpet

The trumpet studio at University of North Carolina School of the Arts blends individual study and collaboration to help you become a dynamic musician ready to perform in today’s highly competitive and challenging professional world.

Bachelor of Music

In the undergraduate trumpet program, you will receive private lessons from faculty members who are also active musicians in all genres, giving you exposure to a wide range of playing styles, music and experiences. Your weekly studio master classes will give you the chance to perform in front of your peers, allowing you to learn – from your own performance as well as your colleagues’ – how to both give and receive critical feedback. Your performance opportunities include large and chamber ensembles on campus. Appearances in community schools, retirement homes and other non-traditional performance spaces will give you the chance to advocate for your craft and the arts. And being on an arts campus with other disciplines means plenty of collaborative projects with dance, drama and film.

At UNCSA, the conservatory environment creates a close community of trumpet players and artists of all disciplines that nurtures success and sends you into today’s world ready to pursue a life of music.

First–Second Years
In the first two years of study for your undergraduate trumpet degree, you will begin private lessons, master classes and ensemble participation, while studying the foundations of music theory, aural and keyboard skills and musical styles. You will pursue liberal arts courses in English, math or science and the humanities. In your freshman through junior years, you are also required to attend a weekly Performance Hour, where you will perform for your peers throughout the School of Music.

Third–Fourth Years
Your studies in the foundational courses will continue in your third and fourth years, which include additional liberal arts courses and music electives, as well as music history, repertoire, orchestration and career development classes. In your senior year, you will fulfill your capstone graduation requirement, a full recital at both a juried recital hearing and a public performance.

The brass program at UNCSA has been a springboard for many of its graduates’ professional careers and education. Graduates have pursed advanced degrees at prestigious institutions like the Manhattan School of Music and Indiana University in Bloomington, completed fellowships at Lincoln Center and studied musicology in Vienna. Others are part of ensembles, like the local Camel City Jazz Orchestra and Giannini Brass Quintet, Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra and ceremonial bands in the United States military. Still others have found their calling in arts administration with organizations like The Philly Pops and our very own UNCSA.
