Introducing the new University Ombuds

Joshua CanzonaNote: All staff is invited to hear Joshua speak at the Staff Council meeting at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 21, in the Fourth Floor North End Reading/Special Event space.

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to introduce myself as the new University Ombuds here at UNCSA. As Ombuds, I am available to meet with any staff or faculty member facing a conflict or challenge at work.

Our conversations will be guided by professional and ethical standards of practice meant to provide you with a safe environment to discuss difficult issues. Ombuds services are:

  • Confidential: All conversations are held in the strictest confidence except in cases where someone is in danger of physical harm.
  • Informal: Speaking with the Ombuds does not initiate any formal proceedings. You maintain complete control of your situation and choose next steps—if any.
  • Neutral: The Ombuds does not take sides in a conflict.
  • Independent: The Ombuds is independent in structure, function, and appearance to the highest possible degree. An Ombuds meeting can provide an opportunity to describe problems to an impartial listener, practice for difficult conversations, clarify university policies, identify goals, and consider options.

Remember, my only agenda is to improve UNCSA and I work for you. Feel free to reach out to me at any time to schedule a meeting through email but please do not disclose any confidential information until we can meet in person.

My email address is:

It is an honor to serve this community and I wish you every success as the semester begins.
