Director of Library Services retires to pursue writing career

Vicki WeavilVicki Weavil will be retiring Dec. 31, 2017, after 25 years of service as Director of the Library at UNCSA. A published author, Vicki will be leaving to pursue her writing career full-time. Her last day at UNCSA is Dec. 14.

During her tenure at UNCSA, Vicki oversaw multiple changes in the library, its services and staff. She implemented the library’s first online catalog, marking the transition from a card catalog to an online database of the library’s holdings. She also purchased and installed the library’s first security system to ensure library holdings would remain in the library unless checked out.

Vicki added two new professional librarian positions, that of Reference and Bibliographic Instruction Librarian and a full-time Archivist. She also managed the creation of the video collection and Viewing Room including hiring a manager for the collection’s service desk. These positions allowed the creation of the library’s instruction programs, preservation of the school’s records and the addition of varied media formats to support programs at UNCSA.

She opened the previously closed lower stacks allowing public access to areas of the collection housed in the basement of the old library. Under Vicki’s guidance, the library’s collection grew and expanded both in print and electronically. She was able to create a systems department to oversee the library’s computers and A/V equipment, website and digital collections.

As the library outgrew its former home, Vicki advocated for funding for a new building, collaborated on the design and planning, and coordinated the move to the new library. She has served on numerous campus committees and has represented the library and UNCSA at professional conferences on both the state and national level.

Please join the library staff in thanking Vicki and wishing her all the best as she begins a new chapter (pun intended) in her life.
