Gaiters banned as face coverings on campus

students wearing masksUNCSA bans gaiters, also known as neck gaiters or neck sleeve, for use as a face covering on campus. Our infection disease prevention consultant Karen Hoffman cited a recent study by Duke University that this type of mask demonstrated to increase spread of the virus through the mask.

In addition to gaiters, bandanas and scarves are also banned for use as a face covering on campus. A double cotton cloth mask that has a snug fit, covers your nose and mouth, and worn with a wire nose insert is acceptable as an alternative to a mask.
