Martin Luther King Day activities planned

Martin Luther King Jr. portraitMost of those who were schooled in the U.S. have heard of Martin Luther King (MLK) Day, as the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It is one of the most notable public servants in our history. What most do not know is that MLK is the only federal holiday dedicated to service being heralded as "a day on, not a day off." Coretta Scott King said, “The greatest birthday gift my husband could receive is if people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds celebrated the holiday by performing individual acts of kindness through service to others.”

This year, to honor King's tireless work for social justice, community empowerment, and civil rights, the Office of Intercultural Engagement is coordinating two events:

Reading of the Letter From the Birmingham Jail
Monday, Jan. 16 at 2 p.m. in Hanes Student Commons, Eisenberg.
Come be inspired by UNCSA community members reading MLK's letter, along with other performances and reflections on how to live out his legacy year-round. This is event is co-sponsored by Residence Life.

Day of Service Read-In
Saturday, Jan. 21 from 7:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Wake Forest University.

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly."
Letter from Birmingham, Alabama jail, April 16, 1963.
