Faculty applications for spring leadership and enrichment grants open

Illustration of ideas moving through a light bulbThe Kenan Institute for the Arts invites UNCSA faculty to submit applications for the spring Faculty Leadership Grants and Faculty Enrichment Grants, which offer UNCSA faculty an opportunity to develop and implement innovative ideas that advance creative learning, leadership, innovation and engagement on campus and beyond.
Full-time and adjunct and visiting faculty are eligible for the grants. All applicants must be employed by UNCSA both when submitting a grant proposal and when completing the project. Faculty will not be eligible to apply for either grant if their proposed project does not occur during a period of employment.
All applications and funded projects must comply with current UNCSA health and safety guidelines.

Faculty Leadership Grants

Deadline: March 14, 2022

These grants are awarded to faculty who are exploring new approaches to creative learning challenges; developing new ideas, research, strategies, initiatives or curricular innovations; and/or fostering and expanding leadership capacity. Faculty Leadership Grants should also identify pertinent student learning outcomes. Proposed projects must be completed by December 2022. Awards range from $300-$5,000, depending on the number and quality of the application pool; the average award is around $2,500.

Faculty Leadership Grant application process:

  1. Schedule meeting with Candy Martinez, Kenan Institute for the Arts assistant business manager, to review proposal/idea at least two weeks prior to the application deadline. Applications submitted without Kenan Institute review will not be considered.
  2. Discuss your idea with your dean or the provost. Listen to their feedback and confirm their support before continuing application process. Deans will be asked to confirm approval upon application submission. Applications without dean approval will not be considered.
  3. Prepare and submit application and budget.
  4. Faculty Leadership applications will be reviewed by a Grant Review Committee and may be returned for further edits.
  5. Applicants will be notified regarding Faculty Leadership Grants by April 1, 2022.

Faculty Enrichment Grants

Rolling Deadline; Applications reviewed upon submission

Faculty Enrichment Grants augment student learning by subsidizing ticket and transportation costs to attend virtual performances, exhibits and screenings. These grants are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, and may only be applied to admission cost.
Due to continued public health concerns, faculty are encouraged to pursue virtual options, though some in-person experiences may be considered on a case-by-case basis. In order for an off-campus travel request to be considered, faculty must get the approval of their school's dean. This policy may be revised based on the Kenan Institute and UNCSA policies.
Examples of virtual uses of funds:

  • Honorariums for virtual guest speakers
  • Costs related to streamed performances
  • Virtual conferences/master classes

To receive advance funding, applications must be submitted at least two weeks prior to the event (otherwise, faculty can be reimbursed for expenses). It is recommended that faculty do not make purchases prior to submitting an application since funding is not guaranteed until the application is approved.

Faculty Enrichment Grant application process:

  1. Prepare and submit application and budget.
  2. Enrichment grants will be reviewed and approved by the Kenan Institute executive staff and may be returned for further edits.
  3. Applicants will be notified regarding Enrichment Grants within 30 days of submission and funding is generally available within 30 days of notification.
