William R. Kenan, Jr. Fellowships at The Kennedy Center
The William R. Kenan Jr. Fellowship at The Kennedy Center, now in its 18th year, seeks to provide emerging theater artists with a wide variety of experiences bridging their academic training with the professional theater community. Kennedy Center Fellows are placed on projects with professional companies in Washington, D.C., including The Shakespeare Theatre, Folger Theatre, Studio Theatre, Theatre J. Arena Stage and others, and with partner theaters across the country.
The Kenan Fellowships at The Kennedy Center are open to graduates and current students of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) undergraduate and graduate degree programs from the Schools of Drama and Design & Production, who are members of the classes of 2015-2020. All Design & Production disciplines are eligible, and directors and actors with strong cross-disciplinary or theatre-in-education interests will be considered.
In addition to their theater-based practicum, the Kenan Fellows will also be an important part of an extraordinary cohort of artists in the new and innovative Creative Catalysts Program, a partnership with the Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts at UNCSA. The Creative Catalysts Program is designed to develop and empower artists leaders, entrepreneurs and innovators to lead, create and make, while engaging the arts and creative sectors. Goals include fostering arts leaders who can solve business problems with innovative solutions; developing a strong creative workforce and industry; promoting local creative enterprise to keep artists in communities; and increasing diversity among creative leaders and the workforce. Program goals are attained through:
- year-long educational and community building opportunities
- an online certificate program in artist leadership
- mentoring and networking
- participation in the annual Creative Catalysts Summit in Winston-Salem, NC
William R. Kenan, Jr. Fellowships at The Kennedy Center receive a salary of $700 per week and reimbursement for moving expenses to and from the Fellowship (up to $500 each way).
Up to five candidates will be selected for a Kenan Fellowship beginning in Fall 2020. Students and graduates of UNCSA’s high school program are not eligible.
