William R. Kenan, Jr. Fellowships at The Kennedy Center
NOTE: Revisions are being made to this Fellowship. As information becomes available, it will be posted on this page.
The William R. Kenan Jr. Fellowship at The Kennedy Center, now in its 18th year, seeks to provide emerging theater artists with a wide variety of experiences bridging their academic training with the professional theater community. Kennedy Center Fellows are placed on projects with professional companies in Washington, D.C., including The Shakespeare Theatre, Folger Theatre, Studio Theatre, Theatre J. Arena Stage and others, and with partner theaters across the country.
The Kenan Fellowships at The Kennedy Center are open to graduates and current students of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) undergraduate and graduate degree programs from the Schools of Drama and Design & Production, who are members of the classes of 2015-2020. All Design & Production disciplines are eligible, and directors and actors with strong cross-disciplinary or theatre-in-education interests will be considered.
In addition to their theater-based practicum, the Kenan Fellows will also receive a Creative Catalyst Fellowship and be an important part of an extraordinary cohort of artists in the Creative Catalysts Program, a partnership with the Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts at UNCSA. The Creative Catalysts Program develops and empowers artist leaders, entrepreneurs and innovators to lead, create and make, while engaging the arts and creative sectors. As a required part of their fellowship experience, William R. Kenan, Jr. Fellows at The Kennedy Center will complete the online Creative Catalyst Certificate Program, which teaches creative leadership practices, innovative thinking strategies and entrepreneurial skills. Fellows will also attend the 2020 and 2021 Artivate Summits in Winston-Salem, which offer immersive arts experiences and energizing networking and mentoring events.
William R. Kenan, Jr. Fellowships at The Kennedy Center receive a salary of $700 per week and reimbursement for moving expenses to and from the Fellowship (up to $500 each way).
Up to five candidates will be selected for a Kenan Fellowship beginning in Fall 2020. Students and graduates of UNCSA’s high school program are not eligible.
