SECU Public Fellows Internships Program

Thanks to generous support from the State Employees Credit Union (SECU) Foundation, UNCSA is offering five SECU Public Fellows Internships to current first-year students through third-year students. Each intern will work 330 hours during the summer and receive $5000.

The SECU Public Fellows Internships Program develops future student leaders, helps build capacity at nonprofit and government agencies, provides meaningful work experience, develops professional networks and skills and helps talented young people serve in rural areas of NC.

Student Eligibility

UNCSA college students must meet the following criteria:

  • Hold North Carolina residency
  • Be enrolled as a full-time college student who will be continuing college in Fall 2022
  • Must not be a director, employee, or family member of a director or employee of SECU or SECU Foundation

Internship Expectations

  • Sign an internship participation agreement.
  • Complete 330 hours of work at the internship location between May 9 and Aug. 17. (Specific start and end dates will be determined by the internship location and intern.)
  • Attend the May 6 orientation and Aug. 18 post-internship professional development at UNCSA.
  • Be willing to participate in local SECU branch meeting and possibly a SECU Foundation Board of Director meeting following the internship.
  • Complete all internship requirements including progress report, surveys, and documentation.

Characteristics of a Successful Candidate

Successful candidates will be self-starters, collaborative, and diligent. They will exhibit professionalism and good communication abilities. They will be open to building skills and developing professional networks through this internship opportunity.

Student applications will include a general information section and a short essay or writing sample. Applicants will be interviewed by a selection committee.

Interns are responsible for housing and travel expenses. The internship stipend will not be taxed therefore, interns are responsible for paying applicable taxes.


The SECU Fellows Internship application includes:

  • Student Information Section
  • Supporting Documents Section (submit a single PDF file that includes the following)
    • Short essay (400 words maximum) addressing these questions: (1) why are you interested in this opportunity, (2) what skills do you bring to the program, (3) what do you hope to learn?
    • Resume
