UNCSA Wind Ensemble and Chamber Winds: Inspiration, Imitation and Flattery

UNCSA Wind Ensemble: InspirationJaren Atherholt

Emerging Artist Series

Faculty Oboe Artist Jaren Atherholt performs Frank Ticheli’s "Serenade for Kristin" evoking emotive ranges from the poignant to joy and, in the end, love.  Featuring a solo saxophone quartet, Rob Smith titled his "Catalytic Concerto" as a pun in how he intertwines a set of polarizing harmonies and a contrasting scale much in the way a catalytic converter alters car emissions with an enzyme so they are less harmful to the environment.

Invoking images from the theater, the Chamber Winds perform Kurt Weill’s Suite from "Three Penny Opera" featuring guest conductor, Timothy Heath. The Wind Ensemble performs works inspired from the texts of St. Francis of Assisi ("Canticle of the Creatures" – James Curnow) and the words of Rainer Maria Rilke ("Pathways" – Danielle Fisher). The concert concludes with Arturo Marquez’ popular "Danzon #2."
