Overview

Guest artists Diego Figueiredo, a Grammy-nominated Brazilian nylon guitar virtuoso, and Leonela Alejandro, a Puerto Rican classical guitarist, will headline the Southern Guitar Festival, which is being held on the UNCSA campus for the third year. Figueiredo performs on Sept. 30; Alejandro, on Oct. 1.

A brilliant musician who has been hailed as one of the greatest guitarists in the world, Figueiredo plays classical and Brazilian-influenced jazz and traditional styles. While keeping the tradition and the true essence of Brazilian music alive, he can be modern and innovative as well.

An emerging Puerto Rican classical guitarist, Alejandro studied with Maestro Iván Rijos at the Escuela Libre de Música de San Juan and then at the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico. She later studied with René Izquierdo at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. She has received prizes at festivals including Boston GuitarFest, Indiana Guitar Festival & Competition, and Chicago Guitar Festival & Competition.

Guitar Department Chair Joseph Pecoraro and the UNCSA guitar program will host. Free entry is granted to faculty, staff and students upon presentation of a UNCSA ID.
