It’s natural to celebrate accomplishment in the classroom, but I also make sure we celebrate improvement. Especially for students who have historically struggled in math, it is important to acknowledge their growth. I also work very hard to find time outside of class to help students when they feel that they need a little extra help. As important as this time is for helping them master a particular concept, it is equally important as a way to show them that I want them to succeed, show them that I am willing to help them in any way that I can, and praise their willingness to seek help when they need it.
Math is difficult for a lot of students, but I hope that through my classroom structure students will learn to work together, realize that we all make mistakes and mistakes are part of the learning process and learn to think through problems.
