But for Kotsur, acting is more than personal achievement — it’s about shifting perceptions.
Winning an Academy Award for CODA was a milestone, not just for his career but for
representation. “They didn’t just recognize me as a Deaf actor,” he recalls. “I was
an actor who happened to be Deaf.” Yet even as he celebrates progress, he knows there’s
more work to do. He continues to push for a more inclusive industry, using his platform
to advocate for Deaf and disabled actors.
At his core, Kotsur remains a storyteller. He imagines characters no one expects —
a Deaf rodeo rider, a Deaf president, a villain so compelling you almost root for
him. "The best stories," he says, "are the ones that surprise us." With every role,
he challenges audiences to expand their imaginations, proving that the most unforgettable
characters are the ones we never saw coming.
His advice to young artists? Stretch your limits, embrace every opportunity — big
or small — and have fun. "When you step into a room, own it. Make them remember you,"
he says. "Your time will come."
