Anyone 18 or older or who will be 18 on the next election day can register and vote where they reside. According to the State Board of Elections, a registered voter can only have one residence. If you consider your school address to be your residence, you can register to vote in Forsyth County where UNCSA is located.

If your home is in the community where you attend school, you may register to vote at your address while in school. If you plan to return home after college, either within North Carolina or in another state, you should remain registered in your hometown.

You can request to vote by mail on the State Board of Elections website, or by submitting a completed and signed form to your county board of elections by mail or in person. You will receive a ballot and envelope in the mail in order to mail your ballot to your county board of elections.

You can only vote in one location.

This is your decision. According to the NC State Board of Elections, there are three recognized political parties in North Carolina: Democratic, Libertarian, and Republican. If you select a party on the voter registration form that is not recognized in NC, you will be registered as Unaffiliated.

Yes. According to the NC State Board of Election, If you are an unaffiliated voter, you can choose to participate in any recognized party’s partisan primary, or you may request a non-partisan ballot. However, you must choose only one party's primary. Participating in a partisan primary will not affect your status as an unaffiliated voter. If you request a non-partisan ballot, you will only vote for those contests that are non-partisan (i.e. judicial contests, etc.)

Voters will be asked to show a photo ID when voting in North Carolina, starting with the 2023 municipal elections. Many types of identification – including driver licenses, U.S. passports, and state-approved student/public employee IDs – will be accepted.

The North Carolina State Board of Elections approved 99 student and public employee voter IDs, including UNCSA’s, for the 2023 municipal elections and 2024 primary and general elections. That means all UNCSA students and employees may use their UNCSA photo IDs when voting. Newly approved cards will remain valid for use as a voter’s photo ID through Dec. 31, 2024.

If voters do not have an accepted photo ID, they can get one for free at a local N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles office, or from their local county board of elections office.

However, all voters can vote without ID with a Photo ID Exception Form and a provisional ballot. The same is true for all absentee voters. Voters who vote by mail will be asked to include a photocopy of an acceptable photo ID when returning their ballot by mail. Learn more about Voter ID at the N.C. State Board of Elections website.

According to the NC State Board of Elections, state law mandates that each person who presents to vote be given the opportunity. In no circumstance will a voter be turned away.  See reasons why you may have to do provisional voting.

These voters are researched by the county or state board of elections, who will determine if their vote will count and what parts of the ballot count. You can check the status of your provisional ballot on the state election board's website at https://www.ncsbe.gov/Voting-Options/Provisional-Voting.

No. Where you register to vote will not affect federal financial aid such as Pell grants and Perkins or Stafford loans or your dependency status regarding FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).

If you receive scholarship money from a state, county, town or private entity (i.e. an entity other than the federal government) you should confirm that residency in a particular place is not a requirement of the scholarship and/or that voter registration in NC will not affect your eligibility.

Voter advocacy groups may be sending the absentee ballot request forms for you to complete to request an absentee mail-in ballot.

The N. C. General Assembly passed a law in 2019 banning election officials from accepting any pre-filled forms. The State Board urges voters to discard any absentee ballot request form they receive that includes pre-filled voter information.

All registered voters in North Carolina may request an absentee by-mail ballot. The official 2020 State Absentee Ballot Request Form is available for download from the State Board of Elections website. Voters may also pick up a request form from their county board of elections or call their county board to request a form.
