Joshua Mitchell has been the band and orchestra director at Kernersville Middle School (KMS) in Kernersville since 2023. Prior to Kernersville Middle School, Mitchell taught high school band at Ashe County High School in West Jefferson, N.C., and middle school band and chorus at Piney Grove Middle School in Lawsonville, N.C.
Performing ensembles under Mitchell's leadership have consistently earned superior and excellent ratings at contests and festivals, and he has had students qualify for county, district and state honor bands.
Mitchell graduated with a bachelor's degree in K-12 Instrumental Music Education from Appalachian State University in 2015. During his time at ASU, he performed as principal trombonist with many of the University's top ensembles, including the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Jazz I Ensemble, and several chamber groups, and served on student leadership with the Marching Mountaineers.
As a music educator, Mitchell has taught middle school and high school concert band, jazz band, high school marching band, and high school steel pan ensemble, as well as a History of Rock Music class. Multiple students who have been taught by Mitchell are currently pursuing collegiate degrees in various musical fields.
Mitchell is also a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. In addition to teaching at KMS, Mitchell has also served as an honor band clinician and serves on staff with the Atkins High School Marching Band in Winston-Salem. In his free time, he enjoys cooking, playing video games, disc golf, attending Renaissance festivals, and spending time with his friends and family.
