Laimir Fano is a filmmaker, writer and educator whose work explores national identity,
cultural memory and performance in Cuba and its exile and immigrant communities. He
teaches cinema studies, performance, directing and screenwriting in the School of Filmmaking, helping students embrace rich and varied cinematic traditions to develop their own
artistic voices and approaches to storytelling.
After beginning his career as an actor in Cuba, Fano later taught acting at Cuba's National School of Theater and then served as an assistant professor of film studies at Boston College. His films have screened at major international festivals, including the Tribeca Film Festival, Shanghai International Film Festival and Havana Film Festival. Building on his doctoral dissertation on screen acting, his creative work continues to explore performers as subjects of stories that move between fiction and non-fiction.
Drawing on global cinematic traditions, I help students find forms and methods that speak to their own experiences and interests.
