Lauren Lee's "Photona" light show confirms power in simplicity

In a world filled with complexity, fourth-year Lighting Design student Lauren Lee sought to showcase the power of simplicity through her "Photona: Muse" project.

"Photona" is the School of Design & Production's annual light show that showcases the talents of students in the undergraduate Lighting program. With 112 donated fixtures — 210 fixtures overall — 23 hours of programming time, one rig and more than 100 lights, the students this year went above and beyond to create a story through the impactful and creative mediums of music and light. Much of the equipment is lent annually to UNCSA by prominent industry partners with close connections to the Lighting program.

Each year the show has a theme that students design their pieces around. This year, the senior lighting designers were prompted to choose artists to act as their "muse" for their respective pieces — whether from their actual art, the medium they use or how they communicate.

After researching possible artists, Lee chose contemporary artists Sun Yuan and Peng Yu and leaned into their intricate, detail-oriented and mechanical-style work. Featuring a limited palette, fourth-year Lighting Design student Lauren Lee wanted to create a light show that evoked certain emotions but left the interpretation open to the audience.
