Gianna Marullo grew up in South Carolina, where she developed her affinity for the arts and sweet tea. She attended the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, a residential arts high school, before heading to the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where she is currently pursuing her B.F.A. in Directing.
She is committed to artistry that investigates the ethical ambiguity inherent to our humanity, rather than work that provides definitive answers about morality. She adores work that does this through humor and a sense of play, and is interested in absurdity as a lens through which we make real-life discoveries. In her directorial practice, she prioritizes facilitating rehearsal rooms that balance imaginative exploration with rigorous commitment to craft and technique.
Throughout her time at UNCSA thus far, she has had the opportunity to explore a multitude of works, ranging from directing time-honored classics by writers such as Tennessee Williams and Edward Albee to developing a new play with an emerging playwright. This semester, she is directing an excerpt from How I Learned to Drive by Paula Vogel, and this summer, she will be assistant directing Carl Forsman on Hamlet, the inaugural production of the Piedmont Shakespeare Company.
