Space heater policy reminder
The North Carolina Office of State Human Resources Space Heater Use Program establishes
safety guidelines for the use of space heaters in North Carolina state facilities,
emphasizing safety, proper procedures, and restrictions.
The entire program is available on the Environmental Health and Safety webpage, as appendix C in the EHS Safety Manual Fire Prevention Plan, or on the NCOSHR Website.
Quick rules for personal space heater use:
- Use space heaters only when HVAC cannot maintain 68-76°F.
- Medical conditions requiring heat need physician approval.
- Plug directly into approved outlets.
- Maintain at least three feet clearance around heaters.
- Electric space heaters must be UL-listed.
