A Concert in Four Days

My phone buzzed. I looked at the screen and I saw the name of my ArtistCorps site coordinator, Melissa. She had texted me asking if I could put together an hour’s worth of music for The Elizabeth and Tab Williams Adult Day Center. How could I say no? The only issue was that I didn’t have much time to put this concert together. In fact, I had four days. I am not going to lie: I was stressed. On top of the many other performances I had already been preparing, I now had to find an hour’s worth of music in such a short amount of time.

I knew this was something I shouldn’t do alone. I immediately messaged my studio and asked my friends if anyone would be interested in performing with me. I was able to gain the enthusiasm of my talented School of Music friends Bonnie, Katherina, Jalen, and Jacob. Our group now had three singers, a pianist, and a saxophone player! The group and I had a quick meeting in the cafeteria about repertoire and Katherina and I spent hours of our Sunday afternoon in the library, scanning, copying, and printing music for everyone.

With only one rehearsal as a group and one rehearsal in sections, we were able to put on a successful show with acapella quartets, saxophone, and vocal solos, and best of all, a sing-a-long! At the end of the show, we were able to dance and interact with the audience. The Christmas joy could be felt in every heart in the room. The seniors, many who fight dementia, approached each of us at the end and gave us hugs and kisses. They endlessly thanked us for bringing music that they remember.

Putting this show together taught me a lot about organization and leadership. The small amount of time added immense pressure but I am so thankful I was able to experience this. My friends and I will never forget this day of doing good for others.
