Electric Duo

Author: Jane Koelsch

This past week I was serving at Paisley IB Magnet Middle School and was instructing two beginning clarinet students. We had been working on learning notes and developing tone. I gave them each a few notes to play with each other to introduce playing in harmony and supporting each other's sound. They played the mini duet together and really enjoyed the sounds they had made! I had them practice taking turns playing a little less than the other and also just playing one person at a time. After they played together again practicing balance, I asked one of the students to describe what it sounded like to them. At first, she couldn't think of a word for it, but after thinking about it for a minute she said "it sounds electric."
