Eric Powell is a baritone whose versatile career encompasses opera, art song, baroque
music, jazz, musical theater and contemporary classical music. A native of North Carolina,
Powell recently returned to the state after several years performing in New York City,
where he appeared in premieres of contemporary classical works while maintaining an
active performance schedule in church music, jazz and country music.
In addition to his vocal career, Powell has played and studied piano for over 20 years.
He studied privately with Federico Pivetta and later with Karen Beres during his collegiate
studies. He has taught beginner and early intermediate piano to students of all ages
for the past decade.
Powell is the Music Director at Clemmons Moravian Church and is a graduate of the
University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where he studied with Dr. Marilyn
Taylor. He currently studies with Jonathan Sidden.
His operatic engagements include performances with Piedmont Opera, the A.J. Fletcher
Opera Institute and the Princeton Festival, where he appeared in both mainstage opera
productions and outreach performances. On the concert stage, Powell has performed
extensively with Salem Baroque, the Princeton Festival Baroque Orchestra, Winston-Salem
Symphony, Salisbury Symphony, Winston-Salem Choral Artists and the North Carolina
Baroque Orchestra, including performances as the baritone soloist in Bach’s Mass in
B Minor.
