New College Student Orientation Schedules

You are embarking on what will be a powerfully challenging and rewarding time in your college life. Your training here begins with New Student Orientation. During the summer months we'll be finalizing schedules and dates to post to this page.

Key Dates

  • July 12  Music Online Orientation Schedule (Week of July 12)
  • July 19-20 Online Orientation Period for all undergraduate students & parents.
  • August 17-18 Staggered move-in and in-person orientation. Refer to Day-by-Day Orientation Schedules.

Music Online Orientation Schedule (Week of July 12th)

Monday & Tuesday, 12 & 13 July

Beginning at 10 a.m. on Monday, 12 July, and continuing until 6 p.m. on Tuesday, 13 July, new undergraduate students have access through the Canvas Orientation portal to the following online placement assessments/questionnaires. Each must be completed no later than 6 p.m. on Tuesday, 13 July. 

  • Basic theory assessment
  • Aural skills dictation assessment
  • Keyboard skills questionnaire gathering information about previous keyboard experience

Wednesday, 14 July

The theory, aural skills, and keyboard skills faculty review the assessments/questionnaire. Based upon the results, next steps communicated individually to each student. 

Thursday & Friday, 15 & 16 July

  • Theory: Beginning at 10 a.m. on Thursday, 15 July, and continuing until 6 p.m. on Friday, 16 July, students identified through the basic theory assessment earlier in the week complete an advanced theory diagnostic through the Canvas Orientation portal. (These students will have been notified on Wednesday of the need to complete this second theory assessment.)
  • Aural Skills: Throughout these two days, students identified through the aural skills dictation assessment earlier in the week participate in a one-on-one sight singing assessment via Zoom. (These students will have been notified on Wednesday of the need to complete this second aural skills assessment; individual appointments scheduled directly between the student and faculty.)
  • Keyboard Skills: 
    10 a.m. on Thursday, 15 July: Zoom meeting with the keyboard skills professor for all students who do not have any previous keyboard experience. 
    11 a.m. on Thursday, 16 July: Zoom meeting with the keyboard skills professor for all students who have previous keyboard experience. During that meeting, the professor will schedule with individual students any additional needed one-on-one assessment. These assessments held either later that day on Thursday or on Friday.

Each schedule has been organized by specific move-in/check-in date for Aug 17-18. Commuter students have an open check-in from 8a.m.- 1 p.m. on Aug 17-18.  Residential students, please refer to your specific appointment date.  Please make sure to sign up for an appointment time on the Appointment URL if an appointment time has not been secured.  Refer to emails from your specific art school with live zoom links that will be emailed to students prior to their arrival. Any scheduled parent zoom links will be emailed to parents as well.  Zoom links will not be posted on this site.

Music Online Orientation Schedule (Week of July 12th)

Monday & Tuesday, 12 & 13 July

Beginning at 10 a.m. on Monday, 12 July, and continuing until 6 p.m. on Tuesday, 13 July, new undergraduate students have access through the Canvas Orientation portal to the following online placement assessments/questionnaires. Each must be completed no later than 6 p.m. on Tuesday, 13 July. 

  • Basic theory assessment
  • Aural skills dictation assessment
  • Keyboard skills questionnaire gathering information about previous keyboard experience

Wednesday, 14 July

The theory, aural skills, and keyboard skills faculty review the assessments/questionnaire. Based upon the results, next steps communicated individually to each student. 

Thursday & Friday, 15 & 16 July

  • Theory: Beginning at 10 a.m. on Thursday, 15 July, and continuing until 6 p.m. on Friday, 16 July, students identified through the basic theory assessment earlier in the week complete an advanced theory diagnostic through the Canvas Orientation portal. (These students will have been notified on Wednesday of the need to complete this second theory assessment.)
  • Aural Skills: Throughout these two days, students identified through the aural skills dictation assessment earlier in the week participate in a one-on-one sight singing assessment via Zoom. (These students will have been notified on Wednesday of the need to complete this second aural skills assessment; individual appointments scheduled directly between the student and faculty.)
  • Keyboard Skills:
    10 a.m. on Thursday, 15 July: Zoom meeting with the keyboard skills professor for all students who do not have any previous keyboard experience.
    11 a.m. on Thursday, 16 July: Zoom meeting with the keyboard skills professor for all students who have previous keyboard experience. During that meeting, the professor will schedule with individual students any additional needed one-on-one assessment. These assessments held either later that day on Thursday or on Friday.
